What if I miss my redetermination appointment?

Missing a Social Security Disability redetermination appointment can cause delays — and in some cases, it may put your benefits at risk. The redetermination process is the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) way of making sure you still qualify for benefits based on your financial or medical situation, so it’s important to respond promptly.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

What Happens If You Miss Your Redetermination Appointment?

If you miss your scheduled appointment, here’s what might happen:

  • Your benefits may be suspended until you complete the redetermination process.
  • The SSA may send a follow-up notice offering another opportunity to reschedule.
  • If you don’t respond to the notice or miss multiple appointments, your case may be closed, and you could lose your benefits entirely.

What Should You Do If You Missed the Appointment?

If you missed the appointment accidentally or due to illness, act quickly:

  • Contact the SSA immediately at 1-800-772-1213 and explain the situation.
  • Request to reschedule your redetermination appointment as soon as possible.
  • Be ready to provide documentation or a valid reason for the missed appointment if requested.
  • Keep a record of who you spoke with and when.

Can You Lose Benefits Permanently?

Possibly — but only if you fail to respond to multiple notices or ignore the redetermination process entirely. The SSA wants to ensure you're still eligible, and if they can’t complete your review, they may assume you no longer qualify.

However, in many cases, prompt communication and rescheduling can prevent the loss of benefits.
