Receiving a notice that you’re due for a disability redetermination from the Social Security Administration (SSA) can be stressful—but learning that you may have failed the review adds an extra layer of anxiety. So what happens next?

Below is a step-by-step guide to help you understand the consequences and what actions you can take if the SSA determines that you no longer qualify for disability benefits.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Understanding a “Failed” Redetermination

A redetermination is done to verify that you still meet the medical or financial criteria for receiving Social Security Disability benefits—either SSDI or SSI. If the SSA concludes:

  • Your medical condition has improved to the point where you can work, or
  • Your income or assets exceed SSI limits

Then they may terminate your benefits. You’ll receive a notice explaining the decision, your appeal rights, and the next steps.

You Have the Right to Appeal

Failing the redetermination doesn’t mean it's over. You have multiple appeal options:

File an Appeal Within 60 Days

You must appeal within 60 days of receiving the SSA’s notice. This starts the process to contest their decision.

Request Continued Benefits

If you file your appeal within 10 days, you can ask for your benefits to continue while your case is reviewed. However, if you ultimately lose, you may need to repay those benefits.

Reasons People “Fail” a Redetermination

Understanding why you might fail can help you prepare or improve your chances on appeal:

  • Insufficient or outdated medical records
  • Missed doctor appointments or evaluations
  • Inconsistent documentation of symptoms or treatments
  • Income/assets changes (for SSI recipients)
  • Failure to respond to SSA communications

How to Protect Your Benefits
  • Stay up to date with treatment and keep a clear medical record
  • Respond promptly to all SSA mail
  • Work with professionals who understand SSA rules and appeals
  • Keep organized documentation of income, expenses, and health
