How often does redetermination happen?

Redetermination is the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) way of reviewing your financial and living situation to ensure you still qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Unlike a medical Continuing Disability Review (CDR), redetermination focuses on your income, resources, and household status—not your medical condition.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

How Frequently Does Redetermination Occur?

The SSA conducts redeterminations at different intervals, depending on your situation:

  • Annual Redetermination
  • Happens every year if your income or living arrangements are likely to change often
  • Common for individuals with fluctuating earnings, benefits, or household changes
  • Periodic Redetermination (Every 1 to 6 Years)
  • If your situation is more stable, SSA may review your case every few years (typically every 1–6 years)
  • Unscheduled Redetermination
  • Can happen anytime if SSA receives information suggesting a change in your eligibility
  • For example: a change in income, assets, marital status, or where you live

What Happens During Redetermination?

SSA will review:

  • Your income: wages, pensions, Social Security, etc.
  • Your resources: bank accounts, cars, property, etc.
  • Your living situation: who you live with and how expenses are shared
  • Other benefits: SNAP, Medicaid, etc.

You may be contacted by mail, phone, or asked to come into a local office. Be ready to provide bank statements, pay stubs, lease agreements, and other documentation.

What If You Don’t Respond?

Failing to respond or provide required information could result in:

  • Suspension or termination of your SSI benefits
  • Overpayment notices if SSA believes you received benefits you weren’t entitled to

It’s important to stay organized and respond by the deadline.
