Does redetermination apply to all recipients?

Yes, redetermination applies to all recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and, in some cases, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). It’s the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) way of periodically reviewing your eligibility to ensure you still meet the program's requirements. While not everyone goes through redetermination at the same time or frequency, all SSI recipients—and some SSDI recipients—can expect it at some point.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

What Is Redetermination?

Redetermination is not a medical review. Instead, it focuses on non-medical eligibility factors, such as:

  • Income (wages, pensions, gifts, etc.)
  • Resources (bank accounts, vehicles, property)
  • Living arrangements (who you live with, whether you pay rent, etc.)

The goal is to verify that your financial and living situation still qualifies you for benefits.

Who Must Undergo Redetermination?

  • All SSI recipients are subject to redetermination, typically:
  • Annually for cases with changes in income/resources
  • Every 6 years for stable cases
  • SSDI-only recipients generally don’t go through redetermination unless:
  • They’re receiving concurrent SSI
  • There's a special reason to recheck eligibility (e.g., suspected changes in income or living status)

What Triggers a Redetermination?

  • Reported changes in your situation (income, resources, household)
  • Routine scheduled redetermination based on your case type
  • Alerts from other government agencies
  • Failure to report changes as required
